Can You Bring a Phone in a Sauna? Where You Put It Changes the Answer

You can carry a phone into a sauna and it may survive, because the room is not one environment and the answer depends on which part of it the device occupies. Apple rates iPhone for ambient temperatures of 0° to 35°C (32° to 95°F) and storage from −20° to 45°C (−4° to 113°F). In a sauna with a standard 7-foot ceiling, the Ontario sauna builder SaunaFin publishes air temperatures of roughly 30°C at floor level, 40°C at the lower bench, 60°C at the upper bench and 70°C at seated head height. The floor sits inside the operating range. The upper bench is 15°C past the storage ceiling. Those two readings come from the same room, 35 inches apart. Apple separately lists "Using your iPhone in a sauna or steam room" among the activities to avoid, and Samsung instructs Galaxy owners: "Do not use the product in abnormal temperatures such as saunas and steam rooms, or in places with high humidity." The manufacturer answer is no at every height. The physics answer varies by about 60 degrees depending on where you set it down.

Seven years of reconciling broadcast tapes against transmission logs left me one habit: distrust the summary, read the document made at the time. Every figure below comes from a primary record: manufacturer support pages, the IEC 60529 test conditions, a Harvia data sheet, a hygrometer maker's calibration range, and the peer-reviewed description of a Finnish sauna.

The two temperature ranges your phone was built around

Every consumer device carries two numbers, and confusing them is where most sauna advice goes wrong.

The operating range is the ambient temperature at which the device is designed to run: 0° to 35°C (32° to 95°F) for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, and the same window for AirPods, including every Pro generation.

The storage range applies to a powered-down device and runs wider. For iPhone it is −20° to 45°C (−4° to 113°F); for AirPods, −10° to 45°C. Both share the 45°C ceiling.

Apple names a third figure nobody quotes: the battery's "ideal comfort zone" of 16° to 22°C (62° to 72°F). Its heat guidance is blunt. Ambient temperature above 35°C "can permanently damage battery capacity," and storing a battery in a hot environment "can damage it irreversibly."

Powering the phone off before you walk in therefore buys exactly 10 degrees of headroom, from 35°C to 45°C. On a lower bench at 40°C that is the whole margin. On an upper bench at 60°C it is irrelevant.

Where you set it down changes the answer more than anything else

SaunaFin's temperature chart carries a note most builders leave out: "Temperatures vary in a sauna room by height and distance from heater. Ventilation will help reduce it but will not eliminate temperature variations."

Horizontal position matters less, and it is still measurable. SaunaFin reports air temperature 15°F (9°C) to 25°F (14°C) lower on the wall opposite the heater near the ceiling, and states the hottest point in any sauna is the ceiling directly above the heater, which "should not exceed 194°F (90°C)."

The heater has its own numbers. Harvia's data sheet for the JH45B2401, a 4.5 kW wall-mounted unit, specifies a minimum safety distance of 75 mm at the front and 75 mm at the sides, and those are the clearances to non-combustible material; combustible surfaces require more. That unit holds 25 kg of stones. A phone sitting 75 mm from the shell occupies a gap the manufacturer defines as the boundary for masonry.

The placement rule is unglamorous: floor level, far wall, powered off, and even then only the storage tolerance is carrying you.

Traditional, infrared, or steam room: three different failure modes

The type of sauna changes both the temperature and the humidity, and the two do not move together. The Finnish figures come from Laukkanen, Laukkanen and Kunutsor's 2018 review in Mayo Clinic Proceedings: 80–100°C, 10–20% relative humidity, stays of 5 to 20 minutes. Cleveland Clinic gives a cooler 65.6–90.6°C. The bio sauna and steam bath rows come from Fischer, the German hygrometer manufacturer, which measures 8–15% humidity at 80°C and 3–8% at 100°C.

The steam room is the counterintuitive one. At 50°C it runs 30 to 50 degrees cooler than a Finnish sauna, and it is the worst place in the building for a phone. Saturated air at 100% humidity condenses on any surface below its own temperature, and a phone carried in from a 20°C locker room is exactly that surface. Dry heat degrades the battery. Wet heat gets inside the device.

Infrared is where people assume the rules relax. Cleveland Clinic's 110°F to 135°F works out to 43.3°C to 57.2°C: the bottom of that range sits 8 degrees above the operating limit, the top 12 degrees above the storage limit. A cabin on its low setting for a ten-minute session is the most defensible case for bringing a phone in, and it is still outside spec.

What IP68 actually certifies, and why a sauna falls outside it

This is the reasoning error I see most often: the phone is rated IP68, saunas involve water, therefore the phone is covered. The rating does not say that.

IP ratings under IEC 60529 come from a laboratory test that fixes the water temperature. Compliance labs state the condition plainly: "The water temperature should not differ from the temperature of the enclosure by more than 5 K." The IPX7 immersion test runs 30 minutes with the enclosure held still. Samsung describes its own procedure identically: the device was submerged "in 1.5m of fresh water for 30 minutes, leaving it still, without any movement, to meet the requirements of IEC 60529 certification."

Fresh water. Still. Within 5 degrees of the device's own temperature. A sauna is none of those things.

Apple's ratings vary by model and none reference heat. iPhone 12 through iPhone 17 are IP68 to 6 metres for 30 minutes, iPhone 11 Pro to 4 metres, iPhone 11 and XS to 2 metres, and iPhone 7 through iPhone SE (3rd generation) are IP67 to 1 metre. The same two warnings attach to all of them: resistance is "not permanent" and "might decrease as a result of normal wear," and "Liquid damage is not covered under warranty."

One ingress test does use hot water. The 9K test in ISO 20653 sprays water at 80°C ± 5°C at 80 to 100 bar from a nozzle 10 to 15 cm away, four angles, roughly 30 seconds each: about two minutes of exposure, aimed at washing down trucks and food processing equipment rather than at consumer phones.

Apple's liquid contact indicator turns fully red on contact with water, and Apple states it "won't be activated because of humidity and temperature changes that are within the product's environmental requirements." Sauna conditions sit outside those requirements, which removes the usual defence that ambient humidity tripped it.

The damage shows up in battery health, not on the screen

A phone rarely dies in the sauna. It throttles, dims, shows a temperature warning, and recovers. The cost is recorded somewhere less visible.

Apple is specific about design life. Batteries in iPhone 14 and earlier "are designed to retain 80 percent of their original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions." For iPhone 15 and later, that same threshold is rated at 1,000 cycles. A complete cycle means cumulative use of 100 percent of capacity, so two half-discharges count as one. The ideal condition Apple names is 16° to 22°C.

Here is the limit of the record. Apple publishes the operating range, the ideal range and the cycle rating, and no dose-response curve. There is no manufacturer figure for how many percentage points of maximum capacity a single 15-minute exposure at 60°C costs. Anyone quoting you that number invented it. What Apple commits to is direction and permanence: heat above 35°C damages capacity, and the damage does not reverse on cooling.

You can measure your own outcome. Settings → Battery → Battery Health shows Maximum Capacity and Cycle Count. Record both before a sauna habit begins, then track them.

AirPods in a sauna: same limits, weaker seal

Readers reason from the phone to the earbuds, and the logic runs backwards. The earbuds are rated lower, not higher.

The best-sealed AirPods ever shipped are rated to 1 metre for 30 minutes; the iPhone in your locker is rated to 6 metres for the same duration. Apple states AirPods "aren't designed for use in water sports like swimming, or for showering."

Temperature decides the comparison. AirPods carry the same 0° to 35°C operating range as the phone and a storage range of −10° to 45°C. A pair on the upper bench at 60°C is 25 degrees past its storage ceiling, exactly like the phone, with a weaker ingress rating and a battery measured in tens of milliamp-hours rather than thousands. Physical reasoning rather than a published Apple figure: less thermal mass equilibrates with hot air faster, so the earbud reaches sauna temperature sooner.

Apple's recovery instructions are stricter than most people follow. Wipe with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, and allow at least two hours of drying before returning them to the case. Then, explicitly: "Don't use heat or compressed air to dry your AirPods." A sauna bench is a heat source, which makes the room a violation of the drying guidance.

What venues actually permit

Facility rules are stricter than the engineering, and they are written down. The YMCA of Central Kentucky's spa guidelines state: "No phone conversations, electronic or recording devices, food or glass containers in the spa areas." The same document sets a session limit: "Observe a reasonable time limit in the spa area (Recommended time is 10 minutes or less)."

That 10-minute ceiling sits at the short end of the 5-to-20-minute range in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings review, and Cleveland Clinic advises keeping sessions "below 30 minutes to avoid putting too much stress on your body," three or four times a week.

The device clause is rarely about your battery. It exists for the other people in the room, who cannot tell whether a screen facing them is running a timer or a camera. A rule against recording devices does not distinguish between a phone that is filming and a phone that is off.

If you already took it in

  1. Power it down and let it cool in open air. Apple's instruction after liquid exposure is to leave the device "in a dry area with some airflow."
  2. Clear the port. Apple: "tap it gently against your hand with the Lightning or USB-C connector facing down to remove excess liquid."
  3. Do not charge for at least 5 hours. Apple's stated wait is "at least 5 hours before charging with a Lightning or USB-C cable or connecting an accessory." For AirPods it is two hours before returning them to the case.
  4. Do not apply heat. Apple: "Don't dry your iPhone using an external heat source or insert a foreign object, such as a cotton swab or a paper towel, into the connector."
  5. Record the battery baseline. Settings → Battery → Battery Health, and write down Maximum Capacity and Cycle Count.
  6. Inspect the liquid contact indicator if a warranty claim may follow. Apple publishes the LCI location per model; white or silver means no recorded water contact, fully red means it does.
